Class descriptions

Showmanship:
Class is shown in hand with a halter (no rope type halters) and lead. Chains under the chin or over the nose may be used. The chain must exit the halter on the left side. Leads without chains may be snapped under the chin on the ring. (if you have a question, just ask. Show management will be glad to help you)
The class will have a pattern. It will be judged on the handlers ability to execute the pattern correctly. The horse will be asked to stay at the handlers side, to walk, trot, stop, turn to the right and back. The handler will also be asked to present the horse to the judge and move in an acceptable manner using the 'quarter system'. This is very similar to 4-H. The 4-H rulebook has the positions of the handler in relation to the judge.
The handler will always walk or trot the horse from the horses' left side.

Western Pleasure
Class will be judged at a walk, jog and lope, unless specified as a walk/trot class. Horses will work both ways in the arena. The walk will be 4 beats, relaxed and square. The trot will be slow and easy, two beats, diagonal legs with a relaxed look. Always a sitting trot, posting will be a deduction. The lope will be on the correct lead, 3 beats, relaxed and in balance. The horses may be asked to back. The rider will show the horse best by sitting up in the saddle in a balanced manner.

Reins are to be held in one hand without changing hands during the class, unless the horse is 5 years and under and ridden in a regular snaffle bit. Snaffle horses will be ridden with two hands.

Split reins held in one hand will fall on the opposite side of the horses' neck. Example: If the rider holds the reins in her right hand, the rein ends will fall on the left side. Hands are to be around the reins. The index finger may be between the reins.

Romal reins will be held in one hand around the rein and the opposite hand hold the end of the romal. The romal will come out of the top of the rein hand (like an ice-cream cone) and drape back to the hand holding the end. (if you have a question, ask the show management)

Horses will be rewarded for level necks, true gaits, soft contact, smooth movement and proper collection.

Reins must be either split or a romal. Western saddles with a saddle horn must be used.
Horses over 5 years old must be in a curb bit with a chinstrap. No gag bits or bits with sliding mouthpieces. There will be large deductions for improper equipment.

Horses 5 years and under may be ridden in a regular snaffle bit with 2 hands. Severe snaffles such as a double twisted wire bit are discouraged

Riders 8 & under will be allowed to ride with two hands and a curb bit with no deduction.

Deductions are at the judges' discretion.

Hunter Hack

English jumper or all purpose English saddles will be used. English bridles with a cavesson and buckle reins are required. Tall boots or paddock boots and half chaps are to be worn.
The horses will work at least one direction on the rail at a walk, trot and canter. (leads count)
Posting on the correct diagonal is important.

The two jumps in the hunter hack class will be no higher than 2'6”. 12 and under age groups stay with cross rails.

Judging will be on smoothness, steady pace, jumping clean with the knees up. The riders will be asked to hand gallop around part of the arena to a point where they will be asked to halt, back and stand.

Faults will include: run outs, refusals (at the 3rd refusal the horse will be given a no score)
Jumping faults ie. Chipping in, crookedness, racing, refusing to pick up the correct lead at the hand gallop

Speed Events

Speed event riders may use any headgear that is not abusive, including hackamores, snaffle bits, hackamore bits, tie downs, running martingales. Single reins or contest reins may be used. Western or English saddles may be used. Spurs and crops may also be used but not in front of the cinch. Please remember that this is supposed to be fun for the rider and horse.

Horses may not be run in the parking lot or outside the arenas. All contestants will be courteous of others. Leg protection for both horse and rider may be used in speed events.

Youth riders who come just for speed events must wear an equestrian helmet. All riders are encouraged to wear and equestrian helmet.

A fall with either horse or rider is a 'no score'. The shoulder and hip of the horse must touch the ground or the rider much be separated from the saddle and the rider tough the ground.
